210 Fleet during Regatta on Hingham Bay

Race Committee Report – Steven Esielonis, Chairman

As we all scurry to get our boats ready for another season, the Race Committee will be preparing for another exciting season of racing at the Hingham Yacht Club. Our goal this year is to increase the number of events and to encourage racing participation in all venues. If you have an interest in racing, want to get to know other racers, or want to hear how you can get involved, please let one of the committee members know. We will provide a sign up sheet posted on the Race Committee board for anyone who would like to crew. There are always skippers looking for crew, so don’t be shy.

One Design Racing

The popular Thursday Twilight Series will be back again with competitive racing in the R-19 fleet. Last year the fleet averaged between 15-18 boats on the line. This fleet has been growing quickly over the past few years and offers great racing for both die hard sailors and those who just want to get out and bang around the buoys. As in the past the series will feature short course racing with four to six starts per evening.

The Hingham Bay R-19 fleet is a combination of sailors from Hull Yacht Club and Hingham Yacht Club. Again this summer, the two clubs will race most Twilights in waters close to home but will combine fleets for four Twilights that will count toward the Fleet Championship. Contact  R-19 Fleet Captain Conrad Langenhagen for more information about the R-19 racing schedule.

The 210 fleet after a few years of decline is coming back strong and is looking for new skippers and crew to join the fleet. The 210 is an exciting boat to sail and is extremely well suited for racing on Hingham Bay. There are a number of scheduled regattas posted in the calendar so please take a look. Fleet Captain Kevin Riley would be happy to give you more details on the fleet and about the new boat which has just been completed and is being offered for sale.

PHRF and Cruising Fleets.

For the PHRF and Cruising fleets, the Rhoades Bowl, the Hitchcock, and the North Channel Challenge are on the agenda. Additional events in the Bay include the Scorpion Bowl and the Great Chase, both hosted by Hull Yacht Club.

The Hitchcock is a great opportunities for HYC Cruising boats to participate in the PHRF Cruising Class. The annual Rhoades Bowl race to Manchester Yacht Club is a great early season race and a wonderful opportunity for friendly competition. The North Chanel Challenge at the end of the season is the annual confrontation between HYC and Manchester Yacht Club. This year Manchester hosts so we will be racing north and staying in Manchester. Please join us for a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and foster a long held tradition between the two clubs.

Volunteers

The Race Committee is able to support these activities because we have many volunteers and we will continue to provide race management for programs that show enough participation and interest to warrant the commitment of Race Committee members.

Regardless of your experience we have a place for you if you would like to participate. Call Steve Esielonis at 781/749-9342 or email  sesielonis@concordiacap.com for more information.
